Let’s face it is the most important question when searching for help with anything is: What’s it going to cost me? In my opinion it shouldn’t be, but like you I don’t like spending too much for stuff. To get to it…
There have been several surveys about pricing and, including the “big box shops”, the average was over $8,000.00.
My average fee is $1,850.00. Now don’t just say it is way too much. Fees depend on the level of service required which can be as low as $350 for IRS research to over $4,500 for full representation on a complex case.
IRS and State Collection Cases
Research of IRS tax record and analysis of tax problem
Each case starts with research of IRS records to know where you stand. This means retrieving transcripts of your account, tax returns, income documents, etc. The research will also determine statute dates that are expiring, what you owe, and missing tax returns, among other things. This information will be used to determine what is needed and if your case is in pre-collection, Field Collections (RO), Automated Collections (ACS), or under Audit. $350 to $850
Resolution of your 1040 or 941/940 Tax Issue.
If research shows your case is assigned to IRS Automated Collection Systems (ACS) or in pre-collections, resolution of your tax problem thru Uncollectible Status, Livable Payment Plan and/or Penalty Abatement can be accomplished fairly quickly. Offer in Compromise takes more time because it takes the IRS several months to review and make a determination. Before resolution is in place you must be compliant with filing and deposits of estimated tax payments (if applicable). I will monitor the case, including the checking of processing of resolution paperwork and tax returns. Should any solution be “rejected” by the IRS, I will guide you to submit your own effective appeal. $1,250 to $2,650.
Full Representation on your 1040 or 941/940 Tax Issue.
If an IRS Revenue Officer is involved or it is a complex/large tax issue, this should be your clue to get full representation. This includes all communication, paperwork preparation, start to finish, including an appeal of your case as needed. $1,250 to $10,000 (discounts can apply if full tax preparation services are utilized).
Penalty abatement
Preparing an official request to abate penalties on your case (includes appeals). $875 to $1,550.
State tax representation
I also handle contact with the state for you: releasing levies, negotiating Offer in Compromise or penalty abatement if possible. $1500 or higher (discounted if Federal services utilized).
IRS lien discharge
Selling property that can’t full pay the IRS? We’ll represent you to IRS to get that lien discharge so you can sell your home lien free. $1100 minimum.
CP2000 audit defense.
Did the IRS under-reporter unit find income you didn’t report on your tax return? Perhaps some deductions/basis are missing too? If we believe your proposed taxes can be reduced/eliminated, we’ll take on the case for a fee of $1050 to $2450
Audit or Examination Cases*
1040 income tax audit representation
Full audit representation: you won’t have to appear! Audits have many different stages. I can refer you to an audit specialist to enter on your behalf at almost any stage but the earlier the better. $4000 minimum and usually is sufficient which includes appeals if needed/required. Fees will be determined by the specialist.
If your audit was finished prematurely or a Tax Court opportunity was missed, I will explore requesting an Audit Reconsideration. This can usually be accomplished for a similar price. The initial research can assist with finding this opportunity.
Tax Preparation – Normal
Individual returns (including state filing)
Fees are generally $175 to $550 per year. This can include services (client care package) to assist in answering certain notices, limited tax consultations, and more. If you were self-employed (have a side gig), you can expect the fees to be on the higher side.
Tax Preparation – Non-Filers of Many Years
If you haven’t filed taxes in several years, filing six years of returns brings most people into “compliance”. However, some might try to file just three to four years and see if that satisfies the system. That is why I look at the information the IRS has in their system (transcripts). I would charge $1000 to $2000, depending on information found during the research. This includes the research, analysis, getting your transcripts (W2s, etc.), and determine a resolution approach. We base our recommendations on 1) your ability to get refunds and 2) what the IRS is usually looking for, but our recommendation could change if the IRS asks for more than four years.) These fees may be reduced if Federal/State services are utilized.
If you do your research and call around, our fees are almost always considered the most affordable. I have over 16 years preparing tax returns and as an IRS Revenue Officer.
* Audit or Examination Cases – I am licensed as an Enrolled Agent based on my experience and employment with the Internal Revenue Service. Under Section 230, based on the 16 years as a Revenue Officer, my license is restricted to Collection’s work. That includes the limited audit reconsideration and notices that I dealt with. I will refer any full audit requests to affiliate associates and colleagues that are specialists.
